We agreed on Shanghai as our favorite China destination among the three cities we visited. First impressions are a biggie sometimes, and Shanghai had us at "Ni Hao." As soon as we stepped out of the hotel after arrival, this view was looming:
One side of the river called "The Bund" has all old buildings in classical styles that look like they belong in Europe instead of Asia. And the other side of the river called the "Pudong" is what's shown in the picture: all modern skyscrapers built since 1990-ish.
The World's Fair aka World Expo is being held in Shanghai from May through October. We were too early to see any exhibits, but the city has undergone a major overhaul similar to Beijing's prior to hosting the Olympics. The landscaping was impeccable and I read about how hundreds of criminals and prostitutes were arrested and carted away beforehand. In all likelihood the Shanghai that we loved was a very false picture of how Shanghai usually is, but no complaints here!
